Tony Thompson is the deuteragonist of the main The Witch Of Chronicles trilogy. A non-magical history student from Greenwich, he enters the hidden magical world while investigating the death of his stepsister, Mia Thorne. His search brings him into an abrasive but highly effective partnership with Lilia Eberhardt, who is unknowingly pursuing the death of the same woman.

Tony has no Gate and never becomes a conventional mage. His importance comes from his ability to reduce unfamiliar supernatural systems to rules, identify their costs and exploit their contradictions. That same confidence leads him to make a soul-sharing pact with Benedict Blight, the ancient Lord Of Curses. Tony begins the story believing that a carefully negotiated agreement can keep even a monster under control. The trilogy spends three books dismantling that assumption.

Full-series spoilers

Tony and Lilia discover that Mia was both his stepsister and Lilia’s closest friend. Tony’s pact allows Blight to possess him during the Wurzelheim massacre and again during Operation Zero. By WOC3, Tony deliberately uses Blight’s cursed-energy reserve and enters a second private bargain as part of the plan against Falkenrath Black.

The exact soul operation producing the final reversal remains TBC, but its result is fixed: Blight gains full control and Tony is sealed away within him, reversing their original arrangement. Lilia traps Tony/Blight and Black inside the Archive and destroys the Key. Eighteen years later, reopening the Archive allows Blight to fight through Tony’s body. Tony’s body survives, but Tony’s independent recovery and degree of awareness remain unresolved.

Plot

Early Life In Greenwich

Tony was born in 2004 and raised in a wealthy Greenwich household. His mother died in 2007, when he was three. He then grew up alone with his father, a successful banker and businessman whose grief was channelled into work, status and practical responsibility rather than open affection.

The household taught Tony to value logic, efficiency, preparation and measurable outcomes. He learned to manage social situations as transactions and viewed emotional ambiguity as a problem that better information ought to solve. Although his father cared for him, love was rarely discussed directly. Tony consequently became intelligent and capable but socially detached, dryly sarcastic and uncomfortable with emotional dependence.

By young adulthood, Tony was a history student with a strongly scientific and systems-oriented way of thinking. He approached supernatural rumours as evidence to be tested rather than stories to be believed. His civilian appearance—round glasses and untidy brown hair—made him look considerably less threatening than the decisions he would later make.

Mia Thorne

In 2022, Tony’s father married Miriam Thorne, making Miriam’s daughter Mia his new stepsister. Tony and Mia’s relationship was initially difficult. Both were intelligent, stubborn and emotionally private, but they expressed those traits in opposite ways: Tony withdrew into analysis while Mia pushed, provoked and demanded that people engage with her.

Their sibling bond became genuine despite the friction. Mia mocked Tony, challenged the social and familial world he took for granted and refused to let his emotional distance pass as neutrality. Tony in turn looked out for her even when he did not understand her choices. Neither knew how to speak softly about what the other meant to them, so affection often arrived disguised as argument.

Tony did not know that Mia was an artificial cursed-energy vessel, had escaped the Deathstalkers or had enchanted Miriam into accepting a constructed family history. Whatever the origin of the family was, Mia’s relationship with Tony became real.

In 2024, Tony discovered Mia’s body inside the family mansion. Her death was officially ruled suicide, but the scene, supernatural events surrounding the night and the subsequent disappearance of her legal history convinced him that the account was incomplete. Within a week, Mia began vanishing from other people’s memories. Tony’s father, Miriam and the justice system no longer remembered her, while records connected to her case disappeared.

Tony remained one of the few people who remembered. His refusal to accept the erasure turned grief into investigation. By the following year, he was prepared to risk his life—and eventually his own soul—to prove that Mia had existed and discover what had happened to her.

Treasures Of Old

The Pact With Blight

In 2025, Tony traces supernatural evidence to the Ayutthaya ruins in Thailand and locates the entrance to the Domain containing the Book Of Memories. He can identify the entrance but lacks the magic required to open it.

A voice draws him into a mental throne room. There, a figure wearing Tony’s own appearance and violet-black markings identifies himself as Benedict Blight, the Lord Of Curses. Blight offers Tony access to the magical world in exchange for residence and control of his body.

Tony recognises that Blight’s need to negotiate means the entity does not already possess total authority. He counters rather than submits. The resulting pact establishes three known terms:

1. Blight’s soul may reside alongside Tony’s inside Tony’s body.
2. Tony ordinarily retains control. If Tony enters a life-threatening situation, Blight may forcibly take the body to preserve them, while Tony initially retains the right to fight back for control.
3. Blight receives one unconditional future takeover at a time of his choosing, and Tony forgets that the exchange occurred.

The pact does not give Tony a Gate or turn his soul into that of a mage. It grants him abnormal access to magical perception through Blight’s presence and creates a hidden route through which Blight can return to physical reality.

The Book Of Memories

Tony awakens near the Domain and meets Lilia, who initially regards him as an amusing and suspiciously persistent “Normie.” They form a partnership of necessity. Lilia has the magical expertise and artefact access required to enter the Domain; Tony’s analytical reasoning helps interpret its trials.

The Domain becomes a practical demonstration of the Cycle Of Magic. Tony’s questions force Lilia to articulate laws she normally treats as instinctive knowledge. He repeatedly converts mythic explanations into systems, physical analogies and solvable constraints. Their conflicting methods irritate them, but they also make the pair unusually effective.

After recovering the Book, Tony chooses a memory from Mia’s final night. Inside it, Lilia recognises his stepsister as her own late best friend. The revelation transforms their temporary alliance into shared grief. Each possesses knowledge of a side of Mia the other never saw.

When they revisit the mansion, Tony’s family no longer remembers Mia. Lilia confirms that Mia’s existence has been erased from most people and records and detects extraordinary cursed-energy residue at the death scene. Tony’s insistence that the official explanation concealed supernatural involvement is vindicated, even though neither yet understands that Mia herself created the residue.

The Map And Mark

Tony joins Lilia’s search for the Map Of Veracity. Their partnership becomes increasingly personal as they exchange memories of Mia, enter the Archive and encounter Lilia’s estranged childhood friend, Mai Mathers.

When Tony asks the Map, “Where is the killer of my sister?”, it directs the group to a Greenwich cemetery. They capture Mark Nottingham, an apparently non-magical teenager able to perceive magic. Tony’s interrogation fails because his urgency and anger make him treat Mark as a source of information rather than a frightened person. Lilia succeeds through empathy, exposing a limitation that Tony cannot solve with intellect alone.

Mark identifies his only friend as The Tower. The name connects Mia’s mystery to the Harbingers and the Second Great Wizarding War.

The Wurzelheim Massacre

Tony accompanies Lilia into Wurzelheim to retrieve the Staff Of Vetus. Tower later takes Tony hostage and attempts to kill him even after obtaining Mark. The threat triggers Blight’s emergency right under the pact.

Blight assumes Tony’s body, kills Tower and massacres Wurzelheim’s residents. Tony’s body bears glowing violet-black markings as Blight’s soul pattern becomes externally visible. Lilia and Mai cannot stop him.

Archie Rosenberg eventually incapacitates Blight with spatial magic and reverses Tony’s body to a state before the possession. Tony regains control, but the dead souls cannot be restored. The massacre turns Tony from an investigator into a legal and metaphysical threat and makes Blight impossible for the cast to dismiss as a dormant passenger.

Death Of Time

Trial And Supervision

Tony is tried for the crimes committed through his body at Wurzelheim. The Ministry argues that an uncontrollable vessel capable of releasing Blight cannot be allowed to live. Archie represents Tony and secures a conditional reprieve: Tony may remain alive under his supervision while the group researches a way to separate or neutralise Blight.

At the Arcaneum, Tony studies soul alteration, possession and magical law. He remains a non-mage, but his outsider reasoning is useful precisely because he does not accept traditional assumptions about what can and cannot be done. His nightly Domain investigations with Lilia turn a circumstantial partnership into daily companionship.

Lilia And The Birth Of Love

Tony gradually recognises that Lilia’s cheerfulness is not evidence that she carries less pain than he does. At one of her emotional low points, he promises to support her and embraces her. The action is direct and uncomplicated in a way neither of them is accustomed to, and it changes how Lilia sees him.

Tony is slower to identify his own feelings. Mila Cosglow appears to be a rationally compatible romantic partner, but when she asks him out, he cannot accept because it feels emotionally wrong. That contradiction forces him to investigate a subject his usual reasoning cannot comfortably contain: love.

By the end of WOC2, Tony and Lilia both recognise their feelings without formally resolving them. Tony’s arc does not reject logic; it teaches him that emotion is also evidence, even when it cannot be reduced to a clean equation.

Operation Zero

The Harbingers weaponise Tony’s possession to isolate Archie. A Harbinger fatally wounds Tony and invokes Blight’s return. Blight kills Mila and the attacking Harbinger, then devastates the Arcaneum while Operation Zero unfolds below.

Lilia and Mai cannot reliably contain him. Ken Kaedehara returns with Asta and the magic-negating Astablade, allowing the defenders to hold Blight until Tony regains control. Tony survives, but Archie does not. Black uses the chaos created around Tony to dismantle the Mage Of Time, steal his soul information and begin the Third Great Wizarding War.

Age Of Rebirth

The Greenwich Resistance

In 2027, Tony fights with the resistance based at the Greenwich Royal Observatory. His lack of a Gate prevents him from forming a conventional Expression, but he learns to draw deliberately upon Blight’s enormous cursed-energy reserve and release it as raw destructive blasts.

This method is powerful but inefficient. Tony lacks the training, soul structure and refined technique of a true cursed mage. He treats the reserve as ammunition rather than a personal magic system and relies on intelligence, positioning and allies to make it useful.

Tony and Lilia now operate with near-wordless trust. Their battlefield partnership becomes the mature form of the contrast introduced in WOC1: Lilia supplies magical breadth and intuition, while Tony identifies rules, openings and strategic costs. Together with White, they form a chosen family in the middle of the war.

Tony also receives the Baldric Of Requirement, its stored arsenal and the Sword Of Vetus from Lilia. The Sword can cut through and nullify magic despite Tony’s inability to operate magic himself, making it one of the few Legendary weapons genuinely suited to him.

He and White use White’s shed E3 hide to create protective clothing for Lilia. The act is both practical and intimate: the people whom Lilia once treated as dependants now protect her in return.

The Second Bargain

Once the resistance concludes that Black cannot be killed through ordinary body or soul damage, Tony secretly returns to Blight’s mindscape. He offers Blight what the ancient curse-user wants—freedom and an opponent who can survive endless violence—in exchange for cooperation against Black.

Tony again assumes that he can convert Blight’s desires into controllable terms. Lilia initially rejects the plan when she discovers it, then accepts that some form of it may be their only path. The exact sequence by which the plan produces Blight’s final dominance has not yet been established.

Reversal And Containment

The canon end state is firm even though the intermediate soul mechanics remain TBC. By the final confrontation, Blight is fully in control of Tony’s body, and Tony is sealed away within Blight. The relationship from WOC1 has been reversed: Blight is no longer the contained passenger waiting behind Tony’s will; Tony is the suppressed identity trapped inside the being who wears him.

Lilia uses the active Key Of Requirement as a mobile portal and forces Tony/Blight and Black into the Archive. She then destroys the Key with the Staff Of Vetus, eliminating every entrance and exit. Tony survives, but he is lost to the inaccessible prison together with the enemies the resistance cannot kill.

Tony and Lilia have a son around the end of WOC3. Tony is confirmed as the father, but the exact conception, pregnancy, birth and opportunity for Tony to know his son before containment remain TBC.

Writings Of Fate

Tony spends the next eighteen years inside the Archive. Blight remains the active personality and fully controls Tony’s body. Tony’s consciousness or identity is still present but “sealed away” within Blight; the story has not yet established what Tony experiences during this period or whether he can perceive events.

When Lilia and V reconstruct access to the Archive in 2045, Blight fights Lilia through Tony’s body. This makes the first AOC confrontation both physical and personal: Lilia cannot attack freely without striking the person she sacrificed, while the person before her is not presently acting as Tony.

Blight later accepts a temporary truce despite complete mutual distrust. Tony’s recovery, his relationship with his and Lilia’s son and the method by which the reversed possession might be undone remain open AOC conflicts.

Role

Tony is the reader’s principal outsider during WOC1. Lilia knows the magical world but is isolated from its current politics; Tony knows neither its terminology nor its assumptions. His questions allow the setting’s rules to be explained without making Lilia artificially ignorant.

His role expands across the trilogy:

1. Investigator: He refuses to allow Mia’s disappearance from memory to erase her existence.
2. Sceptic: He demands mechanical explanations for magic and tests inherited claims.
3. Partner: His reasoning complements Lilia’s intuition and knowledge.

Thematic Function

Tony embodies reason as both agency and self-deception. His intelligence genuinely saves lives. He notices structures that trained mages overlook, turns metaphysical rules into tactics and refuses to let supernatural authority substitute for explanation.

The same mind repeatedly tells him that a dangerous bargain is acceptable because he has understood its terms. His tragedy is not that he is foolish enough to trust Blight. It is that he correctly understands many of the immediate rules and mistakes that partial understanding for control over every future consequence.

Tony also embodies remembrance as resistance. When Mia is removed from the memories and institutions that should prove she lived, his continued grief becomes evidence. His refusal to forget preserves her personhood long enough for Lilia to reconstruct the truth.

His final reversal with Blight sharpens the series’ concern with ownership of bodies and identities. Tony initially leases limited access to his body as though negotiating property. By WOC3, the tenant has become the owner and the original owner has become the thing locked inside.

It does not grant Tony Severance, Mending or a personal cursed Expression. Those belong to Blight. Tony lacks the Gate and training required to shape the reserve with comparable precision, and the energy’s origin keeps every use tied to the being he is trying to resist.

Appearance

Tony has curly, dishevelled brown hair and wears round glasses. His naturally untidy presentation contrasts with the polished wealthy environment in which he was raised. When formally dressed, he can appear considerably more composed, a difference Lilia notices immediately inside the Book Of Memories.

His exact height, build, eye colour and AOC-era physical condition are TBC. Lilia repeatedly teases him about being short, but no definitive measurement is established.

Blight’s Manifestation

When Blight takes control, faint glowing violet-black markings spread across Tony’s face and body. They resemble ritual sigils or restrained war paint and visually indicate that Blight’s soul pattern is imposing itself through Tony’s physical form.

By AOC1, the body is still Tony’s, but its active manner, expression and agency belong to Blight. Any additional eighteen-year physical changes are TBC.

Personality

Tony is intelligent, sceptical and relentlessly analytical. He prefers direct questions, coherent mechanisms and conclusions that can survive challenge. He is irritated by imprecision and reacts to mystical grandeur by asking what it actually does.

His humour is dry, sarcastic and frequently defensive. He can be dismissive in unfamiliar social situations and may appear arrogant or cold when he is actually uncertain how to engage. Lilia’s enthusiasm annoys him at first because she treats wonder as valuable in itself; he treats wonder as a distraction until its rules are understood.

Tony is nevertheless profoundly loyal. His investigation of Mia is not academic curiosity but refusal to let the world erase someone he loved. Once Lilia becomes important to him, that same loyalty becomes quiet, practical care. He supports her without demanding that she perform optimism and learns to recognise the pain beneath her theatrical cheerfulness.

His courage is inseparable from recklessness. Tony can continue negotiating while terrified because he focuses on what is logically actionable. This makes him formidable in a mindscape and dangerous to himself everywhere else.

Psychology And Character Growth

Tony begins by believing that enough information will eliminate uncertainty. Mia’s death violates that worldview: the evidence disappears, witnesses forget and the official explanation is simultaneously true and false.

Lilia teaches him that understanding is not only extraction. Mark responds to empathy rather than pressure; Lilia’s grief cannot be solved; love cannot be accepted merely because compatibility looks rational. Tony does not abandon logic. He expands what counts as meaningful evidence.

His relationship with Blight is the dark version of the same arc. Tony repeatedly tries to solve possession through superior negotiation. The final reversal demonstrates that a person can understand a monster’s incentives without making the monster safe. Intelligence creates options; it does not abolish consequence.
