Falkenrath Black is the formal Lord Of Souls, the central historical antagonist of The Witch Of Chronicles and the architect of the conflict that destroys Arcaneum’s modern order. As a student he is Archie Rosenberg’s best friend and intellectual counterweight: where Archie possesses overwhelming spatial power, Black uses transfiguration with extraordinary precision and judgement.

The murder of Elisabeth “Lisa” and the torture of Astaroth transform Black’s grief into a catastrophic generalisation. He concludes that plebeians inevitably corrupt forces they cannot understand and demands their extermination. Over the next century he masters cursed magic, extends his Expression from matter into the soul and makes his body and soul capable of continually restoring one another.

Full-series spoilers

Black engineers Operation Zero, coerces Archie into suicide and copies Archie’s soul information only after death ends their binding pact. He gains memories and working spatial knowledge but not Tempus, the Mage Of Time contract or Archie’s precision.

Lilia seals Black in the Archive in 2027 rather than killing him. When the Archive is reopened in 2045, Black re-enters the conflict and is finally killed by Neo Vetus. Neo then copies and steals Black’s soul information in a deliberate parallel to Black’s theft from Archie. Black’s identity does not continue inside Neo.

Plot

Arcaneum And Archie Rosenberg

Black was born in 1874 and entered Arcaneum in 1885. When the Ley Resonance Mirror read him, the contradictions within his resonance overloaded its classification process and froze it in place. It produced no house result.

Black interpreted the silence as rejection, chose House Rosenberg himself and sat beside Archie. The faculty permitted this unique outcome. The Mirror did not consciously reject, fear or judge him; that meaning belonged to Black’s interpretation of its deadlock.

He and Archie become best friends. Archie is proud, loud and driven by enormous natural power; Black is quiet, reasonable and exact. Black is often the only person capable of tempering Archie, while Archie pulls him into action and friendship. Their peers know them as the Strongest and the Smartest.

In 1889, they swear under Ley Line authority that they will never harm one another. Neither later breaks the pact literally.

Death Of Time: The Secrets Of Rosenberg

Lisa And Astaroth

In their final year in 1892, Archie and Black are assigned to protect Lisa in a mission that also tests them as apprenticeship candidates. Lisa persuades both students to search for Astaroth rather than leave the artificial spirit to the people exploiting her.

Black forms a particularly close, sibling-like bond with Lisa. Her concern for Astaroth and willingness to challenge both magical and plebeian authorities appeal to the compassionate precision he still possesses. When they find Astaroth, Black recognises that the alleged monster is an abused person.

The Breach Catastrophe

Meredith uses Lisa as an unwitting tracker. Breach’s forces, magical authorities and the scientist Morningstar converge on the destroyed laboratory. Archie and Black choose Lisa and Astaroth over their orders.

Meredith murders Lisa. Astaroth’s resulting devastation confirms the danger of the system around them but produces opposite conclusions in the two friends. Archie focuses on rescuing Astaroth and on the precision breakthrough made possible by her gifted core. Black sees a loving artificial person tortured and a girl murdered by her own plebeian mother.

Grief becomes ideology. Black concludes that plebeians meddle with magic they cannot understand and inevitably create suffering. He asks Archie to help exterminate them. Archie refuses.

Their pact prevents a duel. Black leaves Arcaneum and turns toward cursed magic, convinced that Archie has chosen the society responsible for Lisa’s death over Lisa herself.

The Lord Of Souls

Black extends the logic of his natural material transfiguration into organic bodies and soul information. That mastery lets him rewrite spiritual metadata, occupy compatible vessels and make body and soul restore one another. He becomes functionally immortal and adopts the formal title The Lord Of Souls.

King Of Souls and Dark Soul survive as older secondary epithets. He is not the “Harbinger King.”

In 1902, Black publicly executes the Magus Primus and begins the Second Great Wizarding War. The Deathstalkers and Harbingers provide the political, military and cursed infrastructure for his campaign. Archie’s pact prevents a direct confrontation between the former friends.

Archie eventually constructs an indirect coalition that defeats Black’s body in 1920. The victory ends the open war but not Black. His command of cursed energy and soul structure lets him persist and wait for a compatible restoration.

The exact mechanism of his survival from 1920 to 2026 remains TBC. It must not be reduced to ordinary body-hopping or treated as proof that every copied soul is a continuing person.

The Vessel Project

Black’s movement cultivates bodies and cursed vessels capable of supporting ancient entities. Mia Thorne is created as the Harbinger of Death for the Order’s purpose and intended as a potential vessel for Black, although she never becomes its loyal member. She kills herself rather than allow that future.

Mark Nottingham becomes the body through which Black returns in WOC2. The apparent boy inside Arcaneum is therefore both a victim of the vessel system and a weapon placed close to its target.

Death Of Time: Operation Zero

The Long Infiltration

Operation Zero is Black’s answer to the fact that Archie cannot be defeated in a fair fight. Deathstalkers and Harbingers infiltrate Arcaneum over years, embedding students and staff until the school itself can be turned against its headmaster.

On Day Zero, the attackers create a massacre and force students into the Root Chamber. Blight’s release occupies Lilia, Mai and the remaining defenders elsewhere. Black, using Mark’s body, stands beside the Ley Line root with Archie and the hostages.

Death Of Time

Black destroys the Dilator, removing the precision that lets Archie use Spatium safely around civilians. The End doubles Archie’s rate of lifespan expenditure. A mass barrage repeatedly activates and saturates the Dilated Barrier. The attackers then gouge out Archie’s eyes, ending the sight required for Tempus and the All Seeing Eyes.

Every layer respects the letter of the pact. Black does not harm Archie directly. Instead, he removes every safe action and commands Archie to choose between his own life and the students.

“Kill yourself.”

Archie complies. Only when Archie is dead and the pact no longer binds them does Black touch the body and copy his soul information. He steals Archie’s memories and practical knowledge of spatial magic. The copy does not grant the Ley Line contract behind Tempus, and Black’s use of space remains shakier and less precise than Archie’s.

The original Archie does not become a surviving second identity inside Black. Black appropriates information from a dead person.

Age Of Rebirth

Black occupies Arcaneum and leads the order created by Operation Zero. The Third Great Wizarding War begins with the old protector dead and the heroes displaced to the Greenwich Observatory.

Black abducts Mai and treats her with calculated respect. He recognises the wound that Archie failed to address: Mai has spent her life mastering Modern Magic, cannot use Ancient Magic, received no Sage title and believes Lilia’s natural brilliance makes her invisible. Black offers cursed instruction, recognition and a formal apprenticeship.

Cursed magic comes to Mai with frightening ease. She accepts his offer. Their mentor relationship is emotionally intelligent and fundamentally exploitative: Black gives her something real because doing so turns her pain into a weapon.

Lilia’s resistance eventually exploits the conflict between Black’s effective immortality and Blight’s own persistence. In the final containment, Lilia seals Black and Tony—then fully controlled by Blight—inside the Archive and destroys the Key Of Requirement. Black is contained, not killed, in 2027.

Writings Of Fate

Black remains trapped for eighteen years. In 2045, Lilia and V reopen the Archive, allowing him to re-enter the conflict.

Neo Vetus kills Black. Only after Black is dead does Neo copy and steal his soul information, reversing the position Black occupied when he robbed Archie’s corpse in 2026. The information may become usable by Neo, but the original Black and his personal identity are gone.

The exact method by which Neo kills a functionally immortal body-and-soul transfigurer, and the exact contents and later use of the stolen information, remain TBC.

Role

Black is the saga’s long-form antagonist: a friend whose grief becomes doctrine, a reformer whose precision becomes control and a survivor who treats other people’s bodies and identities as available material. He links the nineteenth-century tragedy, the modern vessel conspiracy and AOC’s generational conflict.

He is dangerous because his ideology is inseparable from genuine insight. Lisa and Astaroth were exploited. Arcaneum does conceal abuse. Mai is neglected. Archie does benefit from the event that destroys Black. Black identifies real wounds and then uses them to justify extermination, possession and war.

Thematic Function

Black embodies appropriation as a refusal of loss. He will not allow bodies to remain dead, souls to remain inaccessible or memories to belong only to the people who lived them. Transfiguration turns this worldview into magic: everything can be revised if he can reach it.

His relationship with Archie weaponises brotherhood. Their promise survives exactly as written and becomes the mechanism through which one friend engineers the other’s death. Black’s later theft of Archie’s information treats intimacy as data he has earned the right to possess.

His final death completes the reversal. Neo does to Black what Black did to Archie: kill is followed by informational theft. The parallel does not redeem Black or preserve him. It demonstrates that a system of appropriating the dead eventually makes its architect into material for somebody else.

Transfiguration: Body

Black’s natural Ley Line Expression allows him to transfigure non-organic physical matter through touch. He can reshape, restructure or convert material into another configuration while obeying equal exchange and the laws of thermodynamics.

The Expression has less raw destructive output than Archie’s Spatium, but Black’s exceptional intelligence and precision make it extraordinarily versatile. Terrain, weapons, restraints and structures can all become parts of one controlled material problem.

Transfiguration: Soul

After mastering cursed magic, Black extends transfiguration to organic matter and the soul. Established applications include:

  • Altering a soul’s structure and metaphysical metadata.
  • Reshaping a body through its soul information.
  • Copying or erasing spiritual information.
  • Permanently damaging identity.
  • Occupying compatible vessels.
  • Restoring the body through the soul and the soul through the body.

The reciprocal restoration makes Black functionally immortal. Destroying only one layer does not provide a reliable permanent kill while the other can rebuild it.

There is no progressive soul-erosion cost attached to this system. That older mechanic is discarded and must not be used to limit Black’s vessel use, restoration or identity.

Transfiguration: Reality

Black expands a sphere in which both Transfiguration branches can operate without direct physical contact. Matter, bodies and souls within the field all fall within his reach, allowing him to alter the environment and its inhabitants as though reality itself were workable material.

The Signature requires immense amounts of both Ley Line Mana and cursed energy. The sources remain separate under the Purity rule: Black uses both systems in parallel but does not fuse them into one hybrid energy.

Transfiguration: Reality is the sole current technical name. No separate poetic or ultimate technique name is canonically attached to it.

Copied Spatial Knowledge

After Archie’s death, Black copies memories and working knowledge of Spatium. This gives him spatial mobility, range and battlefield-removal options beyond his original touch-based style.

The copied skill remains inferior to Archie’s own operation. Black lacks the Dilator, does not reproduce Archie’s exact precision and cannot inherit Tempus because its authority comes from a severed personal contract with the Ley Lines.

Strategic Intelligence

Black’s intellect is a combat ability in practice. He does not overpower Archie directly; he studies the complete defensive system and builds a century-scale solution around every limitation. Operation Zero coordinates infiltration, hostages, artefact destruction, cost acceleration, barrier saturation, blindness, Blight and the wording of a childhood pact.

His emotional perception is equally dangerous. He recruits Mai by understanding what Archie failed to give her rather than by relying on simple coercion.

Notable Feats

  • Becomes the only student the Ley Resonance Mirror cannot sort.
  • Matches and tempers young Archie intellectually while using a less destructive but more precise natural Expression.
  • Develops a cursed extension capable of altering bodies, souls and identity information.
  • Persists after the defeat of his body in 1920.
  • Publicly executes the Magus Primus and begins the Second Great Wizarding War.
  • Builds the Deathstalker and Harbinger infrastructure that infiltrates Arcaneum across generations.
  • Engineers Operation Zero and removes the strongest mage in history without directly violating their pact.
  • Copies Archie’s memories and spatial knowledge after death.
  • Occupies Arcaneum and draws Mai into a compatible cursed apprenticeship.
  • Requires sealing in the Archive when the WOC3 heroes cannot permanently kill him.

Limitations And Weaknesses

  • Energy demand: Transfiguration: Reality requires immense quantities of both Ley Line Mana and cursed energy.
  • Separate systems: The two sources cannot be fused into a single hybrid reserve.
  • Touch restriction outside Reality: Body and Soul normally require physical contact.
  • Imperfect spatial copy: His stolen spatial operation is shakier than Archie’s and lacks the Dilator.
  • No Tempus: Soul information cannot replace Archie’s personal Ley Line contract.
  • Compatible-vessel rules: Occupation requires compatibility, although the exact thresholds remain TBC.
  • Sealing: Effective immortality does not prevent containment or battlefield removal.
  • Ideological rigidity: He converts specific abuses into a universal justification for domination and extermination.
  • Personal blind spot: His love for Lisa and resentment toward Archie remain exploitable emotional foundations rather than dispassionate conclusions.
  • Final mortality: Neo discovers or creates a means to kill him in 2045; the exact method is TBC.

Personality

Young Black is quiet, reserved and reasonable. He observes before acting and uses precision where Archie uses force. His affection for Archie and Lisa is sincere, and his ability to calm Archie demonstrates patience rather than emotional emptiness.

After Lisa’s death, those qualities harden rather than disappear. Patience becomes century-scale conspiracy. Precision becomes the restructuring of bodies and institutions. Emotional intelligence becomes recruitment. Black rarely needs theatrical cruelty because he can identify exactly which truth will make another person move toward him.

He respects skill and effort, particularly when institutions have ignored them. His treatment of Mai is therefore more effective than simple torture: he sees her accurately, teaches her something genuinely compatible and makes his agenda feel like recognition.

Psychology And Character Growth

Black’s fall begins with a real moral perception. Lisa and Astaroth are victims of systems willing to treat people as instruments. His failure is not seeing the abuse; it is deciding that control by the correct superior mind is the answer.

Transfiguration literalises the resulting psychology. Matter, bodies, souls, identities and even a dead friend’s memories become things he can revise. He abolishes the distinction between restoring somebody and possessing their information.

The AOC death closes that logic without granting transcendence. Black has spent his life refusing finality. Neo kills him, steals what can be copied and leaves the original person absent. Information persists; Black does not.
