Overview
A Gate is the structure in a soul that allows a person to perceive and operate magic. A conventional mage has both functions; a conventional plebeian has neither.
Several important characters demonstrate that the two components can exist independently.

A person without Perception can still see a spell’s ordinary physical result. A person without Operation cannot cast through a normal Gate.
