A Catalyst is an artefact that assists the conversion of mana into magic. It performs a role analogous to part of Magic Operation and can improve stability, power or precision.
The most common example is a low-grade wand used by novice Modern casters.
Operation
Catalysts range from training tools to Legendary artefacts. The Staff Of Vetus amplifies output and supports elemental attunement; the Dilator gives Archie the precision his natural spatial power lacks; the Orb Of Vetus supports precision and mid-cast rewriting.
Because a catalyst can correct a personal bottleneck, destroying it may change the safe usable range of a mage’s abilities without removing the underlying Expression. Operation Zero exploits that distinction when the Dilator is destroyed.
History And Development
Catalysts develop as mage society formalises teaching and artefact engineering. Vincent Vetus creates many of the legendary examples.
Role And Significance
Catalysts externalise strengths and weaknesses. They make equipment narratively meaningful without reducing every wielder to the object.
