Benedict Blight is one of The Founding Four, the former greatest healer in mage history and the discoverer of Cursed Magic. Once revered as a miracle worker, he came to regard the Law Of The Ley Line as a denial of free will and pursued a power that could operate without the Ley Lines’ permission.

Blight becomes the Lord Of Curses, kills Kyoko Kaedehara during the First Great Wizarding War and is apparently defeated by Reinhardt Rosenberg. In truth, he saturates his soul with cursed magic before death. The Ley Lines cannot purify what their own pure energy rejects, leaving him in limbo inside the planetary system until Tony Thompson offers him a route back into the world.

Plot

Founder And Healer

Blight helps establish Arcaneum and the social order built around the Ley Lines. His natural Expression, Mending, can restore damage with unmatched speed and completeness. The talent earns him the reputation of a miracle worker and makes his later rejection of Ley-Line law especially consequential.

Discovery Of Cursed Magic

Blight learns to charge empty Entropic Mana vessels with intense emotion, producing power independent of the Ley Lines. He argues that magekind should adopt it because it can bypass natural restrictions. Reinhardt and Kyoko reject the proposal; Vincent Vetus is initially curious but withdraws as Blight’s experiments escalate.

In the Root Chamber, Blight concludes that the founders are preserving a system that limits humanity. The ideological break becomes the First Great Wizarding War. He kills Kyoko before Reinhardt defeats him.

Limbo And Tony

Before his defeat, Blight fills his soul with cursed magic. The Ley Lines partly draw him in but cannot process him under the Law of Purity. He remains conscious in limbo, observing the world and refining Severance.

In 2025 he appears to Tony as Bright, an altered reflection of the young man, and offers power under a pact. When the Tower attempts to rot Tony, Blight treats the attack as a violation of his vessel, annihilates the Harbinger and takes control. His massacre of Wurzelheim ends only when Archie Rosenberg reverses Tony’s body to its pre-possession state.

Operation Zero And Reversed Control

Arcaneum studies the two souls while Tony faces trial for acts committed through his body. During Operation Zero, Blight is released and becomes a major battlefield threat. By 2027 the original arrangement has reversed: Blight fully controls the body while Tony is the one sealed within him. Both are imprisoned with Falkenrath Black in The Archive.

When the Archive reopens in 2045, Blight fights Lilia Eberhardt. He eventually accepts a temporary truce. Neither party mistakes the agreement for trust.

Role

Thematic Function

Blight is the setting’s clearest argument for freedom without ecology or accountability. His magic escapes the Ley Lines’ limits, but every use externalises damage into the world. His possession of Tony turns that argument into a personal violation: the freedom Blight claims for himself requires the removal of another person’s agency.

Powerset

Mending

Mending is Blight’s original Ley-Line Expression: instant, extraordinarily complete restoration of physical damage. It made him history’s defining healer.

Severance

Severance is his refined cursed Expression. It separates matter, magical structures and other relationships by imposing division rather than making an ordinary cutting attack. Its exact upper boundary remains deliberately undefined.

Carnage And Cursed Resistance

Carnage is associated with Blight’s overwhelming offensive use of cursed power. He also possesses exceptionally high resistance to cursed magic and can be completely immune in some circumstances. The precise limit of that immunity is not yet fixed.

Persistence And Possession

Blight’s corrupted soul cannot be normally purified by the Ley Lines. Without a body he cannot simply return, so his pact with Tony supplies a vessel. By the post-war period he is the controlling personality, with Tony sealed inside the shared body.

Appearance And Personality

Appearance

In Tony’s mindscape he first presents as “Bright,” resembling Tony with altered features. During possession, Tony’s body develops eerie purple-black markings. Blight’s original founder-era appearance is TBC.

Personality

Brilliant, theatrical, contemptuous and philosophically absolutist. Blight can recognise ability in an opponent and bargain pragmatically, but treats other people as instruments of his right to act without restraint.
