Spirits are magical beings capable of contracts, relationships and independent identity. They are not interchangeable with ordinary spells or artefacts, even when one is contained within an object.

Kyoko Kaedehara’s founder legacy and Ken’s story both centre on how mages relate to them.

Nature And Bonds

Natural spirits form part of the magical-life domain associated with Kyoko. Asta demonstrates that artificial construction can still produce personhood, desire and trauma.

The Hermit’s Curse - Spirit forces contracts with spirits at or below the user’s rank. Ken and Asta’s mature bond instead depends on cooperation. Rule Six may enforce willing Ley-Line pacts, but cursed coercion can operate outside that law.

Spirit “rank” is referenced by the Hermit’s ability, but a complete taxonomy has not yet been fixed.

History And Development

Spirits predate modern mage society. Kyoko systematises care and contracting; Vincent’s Astaroth project creates an artificial example.

Role And Significance

Spirits place consent inside the mechanics of power. The same bond can be partnership, containment or enslavement depending on how it is formed.
