The Root Chamber lies at the lowest level of Arcaneum around an exceptionally dense convergence of Ley Lines. It is one of the institution’s most restricted and symbolically important spaces.
Its power makes it the setting for both a founder-era demonstration and a modern siege.
Known Properties
Blight invites the other founders into the Root Chamber to demonstrate mastered cursed magic. Their rejection of both the power and his secret work produces the break that begins the First Great Wizarding War.
Centuries later, Operation Zero herds Arcaneum students into the same chamber as hostages. Black occupies Mark’s body; the attackers destroy the Dilator, exhaust Archie’s lifespan, remove his sight and exploit the pact. Archie kills himself to save the students.
The repeated use is deliberate: mage society’s deepest source of sanctioned power becomes the place where its two largest ideological betrayals are staged.
