GovernanceThe six-part Law Of The Ley Line

Ley Lines are invisible pathways forming the world’s magical circulatory and nervous system. They distribute mana, recover spent energy and process the memories and experiences returned by death.

They are described as sentient but impartial: capable of recognising pacts and choosing a Mage Of Time, yet unwilling to act as a person’s obedient power source.

Operation

Planetary Network

Ley Lines carry invisible energy through the environment. Their branching structure resembles a neural network as much as a set of roots. Every ordinary act of magic is part of a larger ecological exchange rather than energy appearing from nowhere.

Recycling

Used mana leaves behind entropic vessels. The Lines recover those empty carriers and recharge them with experience returned through dead souls. Memories contribute to the collective informational structure understood as Time, while refreshed vessels become usable Mana.

Sentience And Impartiality

The Lines can evaluate willing promises, reject incompatibility and select a contractual steward. This does not make them a moral deity. Rule Five prevents direct command, and the system does not ordinarily intervene to rescue individuals.

Corruption

Cursed Magic charges entropic vessels outside the normal cycle. The resulting power bypasses Ley-Line law, but its damaged waste returns to the network. The Purification And Corrosion interaction prevents pure and corrupted energy from coexisting cleanly.

Blight exploits that rejection by saturating his soul with cursed magic before death. The Lines partly receive him but cannot purify him, leaving him conscious in limbo.

History And Development

The Lines predate mage society. Reinhardt Rosenberg becomes the first known mage to contract directly with them. Later Mages Of Time inherit the stewardship role and a narrow exemption from the Law of Time.

Role And Significance

Ley Lines connect cosmology to consequence. They make energy use, death, memory and time parts of one system, so the cost of magic cannot be isolated from the world that supplies it.
