Mark Nottingham is a Greenwich teenager who can perceive mana despite being classified as a plebeian with no functional Gate. Lilia Eberhardt, Tony Thompson and Mai Mathers capture him after the Map Of Veracity points toward the killer of Mia.
Mark’s one friend is the Tower. His unusual perception and connection to the Harbinger make him strategically important, and after his death Falkenrath Black uses his body during Operation Zero.
Plot
The Map Of Veracity provides a broad answer to the question “Where is the killer of my sister?”, leading Lilia’s group to a Greenwich cemetery and then to Mark. They capture him after a chase and take him to the Archive.
Tony and Mai fail to make him talk. Lilia succeeds by abandoning her imagined interrogation routine and speaking to him as an authority figure should speak to a frightened teenager. Mark reveals that his magical perception began around his only friend, the person calling themself the Tower.
The Tower later demands Mark in exchange for Tony and takes him during the Wurzelheim conflict. Mark dies by 2026. During Operation Zero, Black occupies his body, using a dead plebeian vessel to enter the Arcaneum conflict and evade restrictions surrounding his own return.
Role
Thematic Function
Mark is the human evidence that the binary social categories “mage” and “pleb” do not describe every Gate. His loneliness also prevents the Tower from being a purely abstract monster: whatever the Harbinger’s larger mission, Mark experienced the relationship as his only friendship.
Powerset
Mark possesses anomalous Magic Perception but no established Magic Operation. He can see mana and magical structures that ordinary humans cannot, while remaining unable to cast conventional magic. The cause of this condition is linked to the Tower but not fully explained.
Appearance And Personality
Appearance
A high-school boy; more detailed appearance TBC.
Personality
Silent, reserved, guarded and described as outwardly edgy. He responds better to patience and direct care than coercive questioning.
