About
| Field | Information |
|---|---|
| Name | Law Of The Ley Line |
| Number of rules | Six |
| Scope | Magic operating through the Ley Lines |
| Enforcement | Structural, not merely legal |
| Known exemption | Mage Of Time’s contract under Rule One |
The Law Of The Ley Line is the six-rule structure that ordinary Ley-Line magic cannot override. These are metaphysical constraints, not regulations a sufficiently reckless mage can ignore.
Cursed magic can bypass them because it does not draw its authority from the Ley Lines, but the bypass produces corruption rather than eliminating cost.
The Six Rules
| Rule | Canonical wording | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Time | “The flow of time may not be reversed, rewritten, or halted.” | Ordinary Ley-Line magic cannot alter time. A contracted Mage Of Time receives a narrow exception. |
| 2 — Soul | “What has passed into the cycle cannot be retrieved, nor shall it be changed in any capacity above the law.” | Processed souls cannot be normally revived or rewritten. |
| 3 — Purity | “The pure and the impure cannot coexist.” | Ley-Line mana and cursed energy collide through Purification and Corrosion rather than stable mixing. |
| 4 — Genesis | “Existence cannot be undone, Nothing cannot exist.” | Magic obeys transformation and conservation; it cannot create from nothing or erase absolutely. |
| 5 — Commandment | “The Ley Lines themselves cannot be commanded.” | Sentience does not imply obedience; the system cannot be controlled or rewritten by an ordinary caster. |
| 6 — Promise | “A pact made under Ley Line authority must be upheld under the same law.” | A willingly entered binding pact becomes structurally unbreakable. |
Rules can interact. Archie’s temporal restoration of Wurzelheim cannot restore souls already processed because his exemption to Rule One does not abolish Rule Two. Blight’s soul remains in limbo because Rule Three prevents the Lines from cleanly accepting his cursed saturation.
History And Development
The Laws describe structural behaviour of the Ley Lines. Founders and later mage institutions codify them rather than inventing them.
Role And Significance
The six rules make exceptional feats legible. A character must use an exemption, a different energy system or a transformation that still respects the law; “more power” is not a universal answer.
