About

Archie Rosenberg is the Mage Of Time, longtime Headmaster of Arcaneum and the strongest mage in established history. His natural Expression, Spatium, gives him overwhelming control over space. A contract with the Ley Lines grants him the otherwise forbidden temporal authority of Tempus, while the Dilator corrects the precision weakness that once limited his spatial power.

Archie’s youthful appearance and irreverent manner conceal more than a century of political and personal history. His closest childhood friend, Falkenrath Black, becomes the Lord Of Souls after the death of Elisabeth “Lisa” and the abuse of Astaroth. A binding pact prevents either friend from harming the other, turning their affection into the rule that shapes two wizarding wars and ultimately makes Archie’s murder possible without Black technically striking the fatal blow.

Full-series spoilers

In 2026, Black and the Harbingers dismantle every layer of Archie’s defence during Operation Zero. They destroy the Dilator, surround him with hostages, double the cost of his temporal effects, saturate his barrier, remove his sight and invoke his pact with Black. With every safe option removed, Black orders Archie to kill himself to save the students. Archie complies.

Only after Archie is dead does Black touch the body and copy his soul information, memories and working knowledge of spatial magic. Black does not inherit Archie’s severed Ley Line contract or Tempus, and the copied information does not mean the original Archie survives inside him.

Plot

Arcaneum And Falkenrath Black

Archie was born in 1874 and entered Arcaneum in 1885. The Ley Resonance Mirror placed him in House Rosenberg almost immediately, reflecting his extraordinary resolve and affinity for direct action.

He soon befriended Falkenrath Black, whose contradictory resonance overloaded and froze the Mirror before it could return a house. Black interpreted the silence as rejection, chose Rosenberg for himself and sat beside Archie; the faculty allowed the unprecedented result. Archie’s force and confidence complemented Black’s precision and restraint. They became Arcaneum’s inseparable prodigies: Archie was celebrated as the Strongest, while Black was known as the Smartest.

In 1889, the boys placed their friendship under Ley Line authority and swore never to harm one another. The pact was intended as proof that their bond would survive anything. Instead, its literal wording would govern every later conflict between them.

Death Of Time: The Secrets Of Rosenberg

Lisa And Astaroth

By their final year in 1892, Archie and Black were assigned to protect Elisabeth “Lisa,” a girl connected to the artificial spirit Astaroth. The assignment also functioned as a candidacy test for prestigious apprenticeships.

Lisa persuades them to help find Astaroth rather than obey the institutions attempting to control her. Their investigation reveals that the supposed monster is an abused artificial being. Lisa’s presence calms Astaroth, and both Archie and Black recognise her as a victim rather than a weapon.

Astaroth creates a magical core for Archie. The gift solves the problem that has always separated his raw strength from perfect mastery: he possesses enormous spatial output but insufficient natural precision. Archie later turns the core into the Dilator.

Morningstar And The Birth Of Precision

Morningstar isolates Archie during the ambush at the destroyed laboratory and nearly defeats him through preparation, mobility and a large artefact arsenal. Forced to abandon brute force, Archie uses Astaroth’s core to make exact spatial cuts and develops the precision needed for teleportation, portals, warping and tightly controlled attacks.

The victory establishes the combat identity for which he later becomes legendary. Spatium ceases to be merely overwhelming; with the Dilator, it becomes surgical.

The Schism

The same incident that completes Archie’s power destroys his friendship with Black. Meredith murders Lisa, and the catastrophe confirms for Black that ordinary people who interfere with magic create suffering they cannot understand. He demands that Archie help him exterminate plebeians.

Archie refuses. Their pact prevents the argument from becoming a duel. Black leaves Arcaneum to study cursed magic, while Archie is selected as apprentice to the reigning Mage Of Time and contracts with the Ley Lines. That contract grants Tempus but charges every temporal difference against Archie’s own remaining lifespan.

Archie benefits materially from Astaroth’s gift while Black leaves the same event consumed by grief. Neither forgets the imbalance.

Teacher, Mage Of Time And Headmaster

By 1902, Archie is a teacher at Arcaneum. That year, Black publicly executes the Magus Primus and begins the Second Great Wizarding War. Archie cannot attack Black directly without violating their pact. His public passivity is therefore partly magical constraint and partly a search for a solution that does not require him to break his word.

In 1920, Archie organises an indirect coalition capable of defeating Black’s body. Black’s mastery of cursed energy and the soul prevents that victory from becoming a permanent death, but it ends the open war. Archie later becomes Headmaster of Arcaneum and the enduring public guardian of mage society.

His long life and outwardly adolescent body become inseparable from the legend of the Mage Of Time. The exact mechanism that preserves that youth and longevity is TBC; it must not be assumed to be a routine use of Tempus, Life Dilation or the Dilated Barrier.

Lilia And Mai

Archie takes Mai Mathers as his apprentice after Lilia Eberhardt accepts responsibility for the forbidden thunderstorm that ends her Arcaneum career. His recognition gives Mai the position she has wanted, but he never addresses the insecurity beneath that ambition. His eventual refusal to grant her a Sage title deepens a wound that Black later exploits.

Archie does not foresee or engineer Lilia’s exile as part of a grand plan. His exceptional intuition tells him that she has unusual resilience and long-term potential, but he does not know her life as a predetermined sequence. His later trust in her grows from observation, instinct and the choices she continues to make.

Archie gives Lilia access to resources connected to the Greenwich Royal Observatory and leaves behind temporal means that later enable her journey to Mia’s final night. The exact extent and timing of his preparations for her remain TBC.

Treasures Of Old

Archie enters the WOC1 crisis after Benedict Blight takes control of Tony Thompson and massacres Wurzelheim. Lilia and Mai can survive Blight but cannot stop him. Archie arrives, incapacitates Blight with spatial magic and reverses Tony’s body to a point before the possession.

He then restores the borough’s physical structures and damage. Tempus cannot restore souls that have already been destroyed, so the dead remain dead. The distinction makes his power overwhelming without making catastrophe meaningless.

Archie invites Lilia, Tony and their allies to Arcaneum to continue investigating Mia Thorne, the Harbingers and the vessel conspiracy under his protection.

Death Of Time: Operation Zero

Tony’s Trial

In 2026, Tony is tried for the Wurzelheim massacre because Blight used his body to commit it. Archie acts as Tony’s advocate and secures supervised freedom while Arcaneum researches the supposedly impossible separation of their souls.

Archie also brings Lilia back as a faculty assistant and special instructor. His authority creates a temporary refuge for the group, but it places every major target of the Deathstalkers inside the institution they have already infiltrated.

Day Zero

Operation Zero is built to remove Archie without ever proving stronger than him. Embedded Harbingers and Deathstalkers massacre Arcaneum and force students into the Root Chamber as hostages. Blight’s release keeps the other defenders outside.

Inside the chamber, Black occupies Mark Nottingham’s body and destroys the Dilator. Without it, Archie’s spatial output is too imprecise to use safely around the students. The End creates an entropy field that doubles the rate at which Archie spends his lifespan. Repeated attacks force the temporal component of his Dilated Barrier to activate until its cost destabilises him.

The attackers then gouge out Archie’s eyes. Tempus and the All Seeing Eyes require sight. He cannot safely unleash Spatium, cannot use temporal authority and cannot directly attack Black because of their pact.

Black orders Archie to kill himself or allow the students to die. Archie chooses the students. He dies by his own hand in 2026, leaving the technical claim that no enemy could kill the Mage Of Time intact in the cruellest possible way.

After death ends the pact, Black copies Archie’s soul information and spatial knowledge. The theft gives Black memories and an imperfect working grasp of space, but not Archie’s precision, the destroyed Dilator, Tempus or the Ley Line contract that authorised it.

Role

Archie functions as protector, mentor, institutional authority and the power ceiling against which the antagonists must plan. WOC1 introduces him as an effortless rescue: the heroes cannot stop Blight, and Archie ends the crisis almost immediately. WOC2 then proves that supremacy does not make a person invulnerable to law, promises, hostages, preparation or moral choice.

His death removes the adult who could solve the story by arriving last. Lilia, Mai, Ken and Tony inherit fragments of what he provided—leadership, knowledge, precision and belief—but none can replace the whole.

Thematic Function

Archie embodies control purchased with time. Spatium lets him determine whether an exchange can happen. Tempus lets him determine when it happens. The Dilator turns overwhelming force into exact intention. Every expansion of that control produces a corresponding dependency: a fragile artefact, a contract, line of sight, lifespan and finally a promise he cannot escape.

His bond with Black also turns love into legal language. Their pact is never broken literally. It is violated in every human sense, demonstrating that perfect wording cannot preserve a relationship after its values have died.

Archie’s intuition about Lilia provides a healthier counterpoint to the All Seeing Eyes. He believes in her potential without reducing her to a foreseen function. Where prophecy would make her suffering part of his design, intuition allows his judgement to remain fallible and her choices to remain her own.

Magical Classification

Spatium

Spatium is Archie’s natural Ley Line Expression. It allows him to alter space, distance and position. Established applications include:

• Telekinesis and remote movement.
• Teleportation of himself or other targets.
• Portals and spatial rifts.
• Spatial cuts and tightly targeted beams.
• Distortion of distance and trajectories.
• Destructive spatial compression, including black-hole-level effects.
• Large-scale reconstruction and repositioning of physical structures.

The Expression’s output is naturally greater than Archie’s unaided precision. The Dilator corrects that mismatch. After the artefact is destroyed, his power remains enormous but becomes unsafe to use around hostages.

Tempus And Life Dilation

Tempus is not Archie’s inherited Expression. It is a unique authority granted through his contract as Mage Of Time, permitting him to stop, reverse, accelerate and otherwise alter temporal events even though the Ley Lines ordinarily forbid interference with time.

Life Dilation is the payment rule. Any temporal difference Archie creates is deducted from his remaining lifespan. A second changed costs a second; wider or prolonged alterations multiply the cost. The energy comes through the Ley Lines, but the time spent is his own.

Temporal operation requires Archie to see the target or event. Removing his sight therefore prevents the use of Tempus rather than merely making it less accurate.

All Seeing Eyes

When active, Archie’s normally blue eyes glow gold-yellow. The All Seeing Eyes allow him to perceive branching possible outcomes, anticipate likely actions and use the Ley Lines as an additional sense for magical signatures, energy and heat through ordinary obstructions.

The technique is not omniscience. Its use consumes lifespan, its futures are possibilities rather than certainties, Blight is an unreadable variable and Archie fails to foresee Day Zero. His belief in Lilia is likewise intuition about her character and potential, not perfect knowledge of her future.

Kinetic And Dilated Barriers

Maintaining the mature barrier does not itself consume lifespan. Its temporal component activating against incoming matter does. Archie can control it precisely and suppress its lethal effect, allowing trusted people to touch him safely.

Event Horizon

Event Horizon expands Archie’s concentrated dilated field into a large sphere. Within it, he can impose spatial and temporal changes across the area, regulating movement, distance, position and the progression of events.

The technique offers near-total battlefield control but rapidly consumes his remaining lifetime. It is a last-resort Signature rather than a consequence-free domain.

Appearance And Personality

Appearance

Archie has long blue hair and bright blue eyes. The eyes glow gold-yellow when the All Seeing Eyes or temporal visual language is active. Although born in 1874, he outwardly resembles a boy of approximately fifteen.

He wears blue-and-white robes with gold details. The Dilator appears as a golden hourglass earring. His spatial magic manifests in baby blue, while temporal power and future sight use gold or yellow.

The exact height, build, facial details, birth-era clothing and cause of his arrested appearance remain TBC.

Personality

Archie is playful, proud and outwardly carefree. He is comfortable being the strongest person in the room and often treats impossible-looking problems as interesting interruptions rather than reasons to panic. His youthful appearance and informal manner make the scale of his authority easy to underestimate.

He is also perceptive and compassionate. He chooses students over his own life, defends Tony when the Ministry wants an expedient execution and recognises potential in people whom Arcaneum has failed. His intuition about Lilia is powerful precisely because it remains human judgement rather than supernatural certainty.

His flaws grow from the same confidence. Archie can assume that superior power and enough time will eventually produce an indirect solution. He underestimates how completely resentment can be cultivated inside his own institution, and his mentorship of Mai gives her opportunity without the recognition and emotional honesty she needs.

Psychology And Character Growth

Young Archie equates strength with the ability and obligation to act. The Secrets Of Rosenberg incident rewards that worldview—his decision to protect Lisa and Astaroth produces the core that completes his power—but also shows its limit. He can defeat Morningstar and still fail to prevent Lisa’s murder or Black’s radicalisation.

Over the following century, direct action becomes increasingly constrained. The pact forces him to oppose Black through institutions and proxies. Tempus makes every intervention a subtraction from his own future. Headmastership turns personal judgement into responsibility for an entire society.

Operation Zero closes the arc by leaving Archie one action that remains entirely his. Black engineers the options, but Archie chooses which cost to pay. He cannot save himself and the students simultaneously, so the strongest mage uses his final authority to decide who lives.
