Aika Kaedehara is Ken Kaedehara’s believed-dead mother, an Arcaneum healer and the holder of the Harbinger title the Hermit. Her cursed Expression, Curse - Spirit, forces contracts upon spirits at or below her rank.
Her return draws Ken to Arcaneum for treatment of the Lingering Curse. The resulting conflict reveals both the identity of Asta and the family history Ken was denied.
Plot
Aika is separated from Ken early enough that he grows up believing his mother dead. When an uncontrolled magical affliction causes his body to accelerate unpredictably, the search for a cure leads him into mage society and to Arcaneum.
There Aika’s identity and role as the Hermit emerge. Curse - Spirit allows her to compel contracts with spirits, placing her philosophy of control directly against the voluntary symbiosis Ken must eventually build with Asta. The Hermit crisis ends with Aika’s death in 2022, before the events of WOC1.

Thematic Function
Aika is the parental and institutional version of the same question raised by Asta: whether dangerous beings can be made safe through coercion. Her relationship with Ken makes the KOS1 conflict a family reckoning rather than a detached school mystery.
