A magical artefact is an object designed or infused to perform, store, focus or regulate magic. Artefacts can let a non-caster act on magic, correct a mage’s weakness or preserve a specialised function across centuries.

The Magiverse uses British artefact spelling in wiki titles; older sources may use artifact.

Classification And Durability

Function Classes

Artefacts may amplify power, improve precision, nullify magic, create adaptive subspace, replay memories, map answers, contain spirits or structure a Domain. The function belongs to the object rather than automatically becoming an innate ability of its owner.

Legendary Durability

A 5★ artefact cannot be destroyed through ordinary force. It requires either:

  1. an artefact of equal or greater power; or
  2. output from a 5★ mage exceeding the artefact’s defensive threshold.

This rule permits Lilia to destroy the Key Of Requirement only by driving the Staff Of Vetus at maximum output.

Provenance

Vincent Vetus creates the largest known collection of Legendary artefacts and remains the only founder associated with systematic Domain trials. Archie’s Dilator—built from Asta’s core—is the sole known Legendary artefact made after Vetus by somebody other than Vetus.

History And Development

Artefacts predate modern mage institutions. Vetus standardises legendary engineering; later characters recover, inherit and recombine his objects.

Role And Significance

Artefacts allow knowledge and power to outlive their makers while making ownership, stewardship and destruction part of the plot rather than incidental equipment bookkeeping.
