Ancient Magic is the original method of casting: the mage visualises an effect and directly shapes raw mana into it. No fixed incantation guarantees the result.
Its difficulty encourages users to specialise deeply in one aspect and develop an Expression.
Casting Method
Direct Shaping
An Ancient caster decides what the mana should become and performs the construction without a pre-written Primordium framework. The method is “ancient” because it predates Modern Magic, not because every use reproduces an old spell.
Vertical Specialisation
Because the method is demanding, practitioners usually develop one conceptual field vertically. That specialised body of work is called an Expression. Archie develops space as Spatium; Black develops transfiguration; Lilia’s Crimson Chronicle is a broad synchronised field rather than a formally named personal Expression.
Risk And Precision
Direct shaping makes precision a personal bottleneck. Young Archie has overwhelming spatial output but initially cannot use it safely at close range. The Dilator corrects that weakness. Conditions that disrupt orientation, attention or Perception attack the method at its foundations.
History And Development
Ancient Magic is the original known casting method. Modern Magic later makes fixed effects more accessible through Primordium.
Role And Significance
Ancient casting ties power to understanding and imagination. It rewards personal conceptual development while making a character’s limits part of the technique itself.
