In the Magiverse, time is real but constructed from the collective memory of living and deceased beings. Memories returned to the Ley Lines maintain the record that gives causal history its continuity.

Ordinary Ley-Line magic cannot alter that record.

Metaphysics

Collective Memory

At death, memories are stripped from the soul and joined to the Ley-Line archive that composes time. Altering those memories is equivalent to rewriting canon: causal events change because the world’s record of them changes.

Tempus

The Mage Of Time’s contract permits otherwise forbidden alteration. Archie pays through Life Dilation: every temporal difference is deducted from his remaining lifespan. Sight is required to target an event, and the contract does not override the Law of Souls.

Loops And Nexus Points

A Nexus Point is a fixed causal junction rather than proof that time can be changed freely. Mia and Lilia’s loop preserves the event that creates the journey. The Hanged Man’s Infinite Loop is explicitly neurological repetition, not time travel.

History And Development

Reinhardt becomes the first contracted temporal steward. Archie later inherits the office and develops Tempus into the series’ defining temporal system.

Role And Significance

Time magic is powerful because memory is valuable and because alteration spends the user’s own future. It cannot erase grief without creating another cost or violating another Law.

Canon Boundaries

  • Time is described as an “illusion” only in the sense of being collectively constructed; it remains real and causally binding.
  • The exact scope of post-Archie temporal stewardship is TBC.
