Mia Thorne is the apparent victim whose death begins The Witch Of Chronicles and the hidden Harbinger Of Death revealed at its conclusion. To Lilia Eberhardt, she is the first person to choose friendship with her after exile. To Tony Thompson, she is a difficult but beloved stepsister whose disappearance from memory drives him into the magical world. To the Deathstalkers, she is an engineered vessel meant to become Falkenrath Black’s body.

Mia refuses all three reductions. She is not merely Lilia’s lost friend, Tony’s motivation or Black’s livestock. After escaping the organisation that created her, she constructs an ordinary human life and makes its relationships genuine. Her death is a fixed Nexus Point, but it is also her final assertion of ownership: she chooses suicide rather than allow Black to possess her and use her against the people she loves.

Full-series spoilers

Mia was artificially grown in 2003 to possess the greatest possible compatibility and capacity for cursed energy. She was created to serve the Order’s purpose as the Harbinger Of Death and Black’s intended vessel, but she was never a loyal member of the Order Of The Cycle. She escaped, built a civilian identity and concealed her nature from both Tony and Lilia.

In 2024, future Lilia physically reaches Mia’s final night. Mia detects her, reveals herself as Death and defeats Lilia to prevent rescue. Lilia’s presence confirms that Mia’s death belongs to the causal path in which Black is defeated and her loved ones survive. Mia returns home and kills herself. The later erasure of her existence from memories and records is canon; its precise cause is TBC.

Plot

Creation As The Vessel Of Death

Mia was created in 2003 by the Deathstalkers rather than born through an ordinary human pregnancy. Their objective was to engineer a living vessel with exceptional compatibility and capacity for cursed energy—one capable of rivalling Astaroth in raw cursed potential and physically accommodating Falkenrath Black.

She was assigned the Major Arcana identity of Death. Under current terminology, this makes her a Harbinger and places the Death title among the ten title-sets central to the modern Order Of The Cycle. That title does not mean she shared the Order’s loyalty. Mia was created for its purpose, raised as a resource and expected to become Black’s body; she did not freely embrace that cause.

Mia possesses no Gate. Her ability to manipulate cursed energy is a product of her artificial design rather than ordinary mage biology. This allows her to pass a Ley Line scan as a non-magical human despite containing an extraordinary cursed reserve.

The date and circumstances of her escape are TBC. What is established is that she escaped the Deathstalkers before the main story, rejected the identity they intended for her and sought an ordinary life among humans.

Construction Of Mia Thorne

To create a civilian family, Mia enchanted Miriam Thorne into believing that Mia was her daughter. Miriam’s later marriage to Tony’s father brought Mia into the Thompson household and made Tony her stepbrother in 2022.

The origin of the family history was artificial; the relationships that followed were not. Mia learned family through ordinary conflict, obligation and care. Tony irritated her, and she irritated him with equal enthusiasm. Their disagreements concealed mutual loyalty. Mia later described him as annoying and exceptionally intelligent, but also as the best brother she could have wished for.

Mia’s constructed identity was deliberately mundane: a young woman in Greenwich with a job, a mother, an unbearable stepfather, a stubborn brother and no publicly visible magic. “Mia Thorne” began as cover but became the self she chose to inhabit.

Lilia Eberhardt

In 2023, twenty-year-old Mia becomes the manager of the Chrysalis Bookstore, where nineteen-year-old Lilia works after her exile from mage society. Mia immediately recognises that Lilia is a witch and knows her title, but conceals that knowledge.

Lilia initially assumes that Mia’s friendliness must be manipulation. Mia instead chooses to know her without demanding magical help, pitying her exile or reducing her to the Wurzelheim Incident. When Lilia confesses that she does not understand why Mia wants to be her friend, Mia tells her that every person has the right to decide what they see in her.

Their bond is strictly platonic. Mia becomes the most important person in Lilia’s post-exile life because she demonstrates that rejection by one home does not make Lilia unworthy of another. They share drinks, philosophical conversations and everyday companionship. Mia calls her Lia, while Lilia sees Mia as charismatic, confident and almost bewitching.

Mia deliberately keeps the magical truth out of their friendship. She knows that Lilia’s Ley Line scans will detect no Gate and allows Lilia to conclude that she is an ordinary human. Her affection is genuine, but Lilia is permitted to know only the life Mia is trying to preserve—not the machinery closing around it.

Philosophical Foreshadowing

Mia’s conversations with Lilia repeatedly approach identity, death and continuity long before her nature is revealed. She questions whether a reincarnated soul remains the same person and observes that an identity may be only a temporary configuration borrowing a body and soul.

These conversations are not abstract decoration. Mia has been manufactured as a body for another identity. She knows that Black’s possession would preserve her physical material while annihilating the person who calls herself Mia. Her fear is therefore not simply dying. It is surviving in a form that no longer belongs to her.

Her chosen life is an answer to that fear. Even if Mia Thorne exists for only a few years, those years are hers.

The Nexus Night

In 2024, Mia attends a formal event connected to the Thompson household. She argues with Tony, rejects the status and obligations being placed around the family and leaves. From the present, the disagreement appears to be one of their last unresolved fights.

Future Lilia later arrives physically in 2024 using temporal means left by Archie Rosenberg. This is not a replay through the Book Of Memories. Lilia is genuinely present in the past, although the night is a fixed Nexus Point whose outcome cannot be changed.

Mia detects her almost immediately. She understands that an older Lilia appearing through time means several things: Mia is about to die, Archie’s temporal legacy reaches Lilia and the future contains a path in which Black is stopped.

When Lilia decides to rescue her, Mia refuses. She slices her own arm, combines the blood with cursed energy and forms a long burgundy scythe. She then identifies herself as the Harbinger Of Death.

Duel With Lilia

Mia fights to prevent rescue, not to kill Lilia. Her speed and physical force compress Lilia’s decision window so severely that the Witch Of Chronicles can barely defend herself. Lilia responds with large-scale elemental magic, including thunder and fire channelled through the Staff Of Vetus. Mia is thrown off balance but recovers almost immediately.

When Lilia promises that she would go against time and space for her, Mia answers through action: not even Lilia can save someone who has chosen not to be saved. She moves behind Lilia before the witch can react and knocks her unconscious with the reverse end of the scythe.

The victory establishes Mia as one of the setting’s most dangerous cursed combatants. More importantly, it refuses to let Lilia’s love overwrite Mia’s agency. Lilia wants to preserve Mia; Mia insists that preservation without consent would become another form of possession.

Death And Letter

Mia returns to the family mansion and inflicts the fatal wound in her own chest. The surrounding blood and cursed residue later cause Lilia and Tony to interpret the scene as murder by a Harbinger. That conclusion is technically and thematically divided: a Harbinger did kill Mia, but the Harbinger was Mia herself.

Lilia awakens less than an hour later and reaches the mansion too late. Mia leaves her a letter explaining that:

• She was grown in a laboratory and intended to become Black’s vessel.
• She escaped and constructed the Thorne identity and family.
• Her relationship with both Lilia and Tony was real.
• Her available futures ended either in possession by Black or death by her own hand.
• Future Lilia’s arrival confirmed that her suicide belonged to the path in which her loved ones survive and Black is defeated.
• She chooses that outcome for Lilia and Tony, not because she feels responsible for saving the world in general.

Mia’s death is therefore predetermined without being empty of choice. The Nexus controls the required event; Mia controls its personal meaning.

Erasure And The WOC Investigation

After Mia’s death, most people and institutions forget that she existed. Her case, records and legal history disappear. Miriam and Tony’s father no longer remember her. The exact supernatural cause, trigger and scope of this erasure remain TBC.

Tony and Lilia retain their memories. Their different relationships with Mia initially prevent either from seeing the complete person:

• Lilia knows the charming manager who offered unconditional friendship.
• Tony knows the reckless, stubborn sister who fought with him and belonged to his family.
• Neither knows the artificial vessel, fugitive Harbinger or woman preparing to choose a fixed death.

The Book Of Memories joins the first two identities. The WOC3 Nexus Arc reveals the third and proves that none of them invalidates the others.

Mia does not appear physically throughout most of the trilogy, but her absence governs its plot. The artefact hunt, Tony’s pact, Lilia’s return to mage society, Black’s failed vessel plan and the final temporal journey all originate in the fact that two people refuse to let the world forget her.

Role

Mia is simultaneously the trilogy’s absent centre and its final active opponent. The audience first understands her as a victim whose truth must be recovered. The Nexus Arc restores her agency by revealing that she anticipated the central danger and chose the event everybody else treats as something merely done to her.

Her functions across the series are:

Thematic Function

Mia embodies agency within inevitability. Her story rejects two simple readings:

• If her death is fixed, then her choices do not matter.
• If she chooses death, then fate did not constrain her.

Both are incomplete. Mia cannot create an outcome in which she lives freely after the Nexus. She can decide whether her body becomes Black’s property, whether her final act protects the people she loves and whether she dies as a vessel or as Mia Thorne.

She also embodies the separation between preservation and possession. Lilia’s desire to save her is loving, but Mia refuses to have her chosen meaning overwritten. Black wants her body. The Deathstalkers want her capacity. History wants her to be a mysterious corpse. Mia’s final act denies all of them complete authorship.

Her erasure makes memory a form of resistance. Tony and Lilia cannot restore her life, but they can prevent her from being reduced to a forgotten instrument. The Witch Of Chronicles ultimately preserves not only what happened to Mia, but who Mia chose to be.

Mia mixes cursed energy with her own blood, creating a burgundy substance that can be hardened and shaped into physical constructs. Her iconic application is a long scythe built around a dark cursed-energy frame and fed by blood drawn from her arm.

Bloodborne behaves more fluidly than a narrow, rigid Expression. It resembles extremely advanced cursed-energy shaping supported by Mia’s enormous reserve and engineered compatibility.

Mia was designed to rival Astaroth in raw cursed potential and serve as a vessel for Black. This does not automatically mean that every portion of that theoretical reserve is trained, accessible or expressed through Bloodborne.

Her duel with Lilia demonstrates:

Appearance And Personality

Appearance

Mia has dirty-blonde, wavy hair with neatly cut bangs and soft facial features. Her eyes are brown but can appear to carry a dark burgundy-red glint, quietly foreshadowing the blood and colour language of Death.

She carries herself with unusual confidence and charisma. Even before Lilia knows anything supernatural about her, Mia’s presence feels almost bewitching because she commands attention without appearing to perform for it.

On her final night, Mia wears an all-burgundy dress that accentuates her figure. The clothing aligns her civilian appearance with the blood-red identity she has concealed. Her exact height, build and everyday wardrobe beyond established scenes are TBC.

Personality

Mia is charming, socially fearless and emotionally perceptive. She approaches people whom Tony would dismiss, crosses boundaries that Lilia is afraid to cross and makes connection feel like a decision rather than an accident.

She is also stubborn, rebellious and sharp-tongued. Tony experiences a more abrasive Mia than Lilia does because sibling intimacy gives her permission to be difficult. This difference is not evidence that either relationship is false; it shows that Mia refuses to perform one flattened personality for everybody.

Mia is philosophically curious and comfortable discussing mortality, identity and purpose. Her lightness does not come from ignorance of death. It comes from knowing that her available life may be short and choosing to inhabit it fully.

Her morality is personal. Mia explicitly does not frame her suicide as a noble sacrifice for an abstract world. She chooses Lilia and Tony. That narrowness makes the act more human and prevents her from becoming a saintly plot mechanism who conveniently loves everybody.

Psychology And Character Growth

Mia begins as a manufactured body whose future identity has already been assigned. Her essential act of growth occurs before the main narrative: she escapes, becomes Mia Thorne and discovers that constructed beginnings do not make later love counterfeit.

The arrival of future Lilia presents the final temptation to surrender authorship. She could allow Lilia to rescue her and risk the future proving that Black eventually takes her body. Instead, she accepts that freedom is not always the power to select any outcome. Sometimes it is the power to choose which meaning survives inside an outcome that cannot be avoided.
