The Ley Resonance Mirror sorts Arcaneum students into one of four houses by reading the defining tendency reflected in their magical resonance.

A student may challenge the decision and persuade the Mirror to revise it.

Sorting Procedure

The Mirror normally assigns a house, but the placement is not beyond discussion. A student may challenge the result and the Mirror can revise it if persuaded.

Archie receives Rosenberg quickly. When the Mirror reads Black, the contradictions within his resonance overload its classification process and freeze it in place, leaving it unable to return a house. Black interprets the silence as rejection, chooses Rosenberg and sits beside Archie; the faculty permits the unprecedented decision. Other canonical placements include Ken in Rosenberg, Miranda’s line in Kaedehara and Lilia/Mai in Vetus.

The system exists partly to expose the failure of reducing a whole person to one category. Courage can protect or murder; kindness can nurture or control; curiosity can cure or unleash disaster; cunning can exploit or negotiate.

History And Development

Used by Arcaneum across multiple generations; creator and installation date TBC.

Role And Significance

The Mirror gives institutional categories enough flexibility to be argued with, making sorting a conversation about identity rather than destiny. Black’s case establishes a different limitation: contradictory resonance can overload the system and freeze it without producing a judgement.

  • Black’s non-result was a contradiction overload and classification freeze, not a conscious rejection by the Mirror.
