An Expression is a mage’s deep specialisation in one aspect of Ancient Magic. It is not simply a single named attack; it is the conceptual field from which related techniques are developed.
Only a minority of mages possess the aptitude and training required for stable Ancient casting.
Classification
Conceptual Field
An Expression grows vertically. Archie’s Spatium contains teleportation, portals, spatial cuts and distance control because each is an application of space. Black’s Transfiguration progresses from Body to Soul and Reality as the concept broadens.
Natural, Contractual And Cursed
A natural Expression arises through a mage’s own Ancient specialisation. Tempus is instead a contractual authority granted to the Mage Of Time. Cursed Expressions use entropic vessels charged outside the Ley Lines and can bypass ordinary law.
Non-Expression Signatures
Miranda’s Symbiotic Ascension is a Signature Technique built from a mabeast bond because she lacks Magic Operation. Lilia’s Crimson Chronicle synchronises a field of Ancient effects without being declared her formal Expression. Mai’s Genesis Engine coordinates Modern spells. Ken has no personal Expression and fights through Asta.
History And Development
The term is coined to describe the finished and specialised products of difficult Ancient casting. Cursed practitioners later use parallel terminology.
Role And Significance
Expression classification keeps a character’s identity from being reduced to a single attack while preserving meaningful differences between innate specialisation, contract, technique and tool.
